Surviving Separation and Divorce

friendly support!
You know, when you are alone suddenly and scared, not to mention disillusioned by all you thought you had that really wasn't, it's really comforting to read a book that puts you at ease. That's what I felt reading Ms. Oberlin's book. It was just the right balance of empathy, friendly support, and facts you need to know to make better decisions during this difficult time. The chapter on learning to laugh was very welcome too. I'd recommend for all women facing this and plan to buy one as a gift for a friend I know who is still struggling with a separation and pretty ugly divorce.

this book is a great support
This book is a great support to women, definitely no signs of being anti-male. From from a caring perspective, I appreciated the hope of reconciliation offered, and yet the firm advice on what life might look like ahead, carving out a new future for myself. Really enjoyed the lawn care humor and the chapter about lightening up during such a stressful time. In fact, I'm buying an extra copy for a friend whose marriage is in turmoil. It may help her make better decisions, too. Thanks much!

This is a good support
I must correct Tim McWeeney who writes that this is a book about taking an ex husband for all he's worth. He DIDN'T READ the book. He couldn't have. It says so right up front in the introduction, and throughout the text. For all I read (and I'm half-way through it, at least), it's a great support for women reeling in shock when separation is forced upon them. And I see in the table of contents there is indeed information about reconciling a marriage as a possible outcome.

If you only judge a book by its cover, you're missing out. You won't be disappointed if you read this book, I assure you. I know the author is appearing locally at my nearest bookstore soon. I'm looking forward to learning more.

Oberlin Architecture, College and Town: A Social History
Published in Paperback by Kent State Univ Pr (April, 1985)
Author: Geoffrey Blodgett
Average review score:

Magnificent!
Dr. Blodgett's book sets a standard for the afficianado of small town history. His ability to place in simple terms the heritage of a town through its physical development should be studied by those who wish to author anything on their own towns and villages. He captures the essence of Oberlin, that curious town in northern Ohio, which he illustrates has always been "peculiar in that which is good" since its inception. It is an invaluable primer for that college town. A+

Next to Writer's Market, a writer needs WRITING FOR MONEY!
In WRITING FOR MONEY, I learned dozens more ways to sell my writing. Chapters are organized with a wealth of ideas from the simple (like writing greeting cards, resumes, and brief fillers) to the more complex (such as article, newsletters or your own book). Upon reading, I felt as if I'd been given the proverbial "kick in the pants" to get myself going. I truly believe some of these markets are available to me. The author of WRITING FOR MONEY has given me courage to keep writing

The Angry Child: Regaining Control When Your Child Is Out of Control
Published in Paperback by Three Rivers Press (10 September, 2002)
Authors: Timothy Murphy and Loriann Hoff Oberlin

CBS Early Show/Bryant Gumble/The Angry Child
I saw Dr. Murphy talk about his book on the CBS Early Show with Bryant Gumble. I was really impressed by the information he gave as it sounded like he was talking about my child.

After i received the book, I could not put it down. The information was to the point and filled with useful advice. Thank you for a book that really helped my family!

great advice
Thanks for such a handy resource parents can learn from. I find Congressman Murphy, being a psychologist, has some helpful insights for parents, especially when he says the answers rest in everyone's houses, not state houses or within the federal government. In fact, he said the same things recently in a television interview.

I'd recommend this book for its common-sense discipline strategies and perspectives into the types of family and their actions that can unwittingly keep the turmoil going in a home. I've read plenty of books on out-of-sorts children. This one, by far, ranks high on my list.

a psychologist in Congress is great for parents
The material Amazon[.com] presents on this book is excellent, but it leaves out that Dr. Tim Murphy was sworn into the 108th Congress. I'm a constituent, as well as a parent, and I'm glad that he will bring much needed insight into issues relating to children, families, education, healthcare and much more as he did in Pennsylvania, only now for all. Your book presents a positive approach for parents and teachers on how to handle anger in their children, and sometimes recognize it in themselves.

Good luck Congressman Murphy! So glad you'll bring learned insight into some pressing national issues.

A Heritage That Money Can't Buy: My Growing Up Years as an Old Order Mennonite
Published in Paperback by Casananda Publishing (January, 1997)
Authors: Sarah Blosser Oberlin and Esther Royer Ayers
Average review score:

The interesting life of a simple saint
Sarah Virginia Rhodes was born in 1916, into an Old Order Mennonite family. This book is Sarah's autobiography, written with the help of her niece, Esther Royer Ayers. In it, Sarah describes the flow of her life, from her youngest years, until the death of her father in 1950. Along the way, the reader is treated to a look into Sarah life, with all of its joys and trials (many of the former, and few of the latter).

This book does not read like a true biography, but seems more like the reminisces you heard at your grandmother's knee, and that is a great part of the book's charm. It doesn't go into any depth on the religious practices of the Old Order Mennonites, but instead shows you Sarah's life, and her deeply held faith. I recommend this gentle book to anyone interested in reader about the interesting life of a simple saint.

Very Good Firsthand Information
Ms Sarah Blosser Oberlin writes in a cheerful very optimistic style that cheers the reader. She comes from a typical large Old Order Mennonite family, people who know what hard labor is. She's best at telling, after the death of her first husband, how subtly and interestingly her second marriage came about late in her life and how much that meant to her.

A Place on the Glacial Till: Time, Land, and Nature Within an American Town
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (December, 1996)
Authors: Thomas Fairchild Sherman and Byron Fouts
Average review score:

beautiful use of language pulls the reader into nature
The author manages to make his various topics (glaciers and their effects on our world here in Ohio, development of flora and fauna of the region through history, etc.)very accessible to the lay person. He has a sense of humour about nature and a beautifully descriptive eye.

The best bioregional biography I've seen
Sherman's excellent book was recommended to me by a colleague while I was preparing to teach a college course in bioregional biographies, and it is clearly the best I've seen. His rendering of geological, botanical, and biological information is both lucid and lyrical, and--unlike David Raines Wallace, whose Klamath Knot is also a wonderful model of this sort of writing--Sherman needs no incidental narrative device to hold the layers of deep history together. Mr. Sherman is a gifted writer and naturalist, and A Place on the Glacial Till is clearly a classic of natural history writing.

Working at Home While the Kids Are There, Too
Published in Paperback by Career Press (September, 1997)
Authors: Loriann Hoff Oberlin and Loriann Hoff Oberlin
Average review score:

This book was very helpful!
If you have children at home and are trying to run a business from home, this book is a very soothing reference to indulge in.

Working at Home - The Ultimate Juggling Act
What I like most about this book is that it is organized into little "do-able" sections. As work at home parents, we all know you can't sit down and read a whole book at once! (Oh the luxury!) This book gives ideas not only about your new career, but how to make the home around you work with you. It really does have some helpful ideas!

Insider's Guide to Pittsburgh
Published in Digital by Falcon Publishing ()
Author: Lorrian Oberlin
Average review score:

Pretty Useful
I used this book to plan a recent trip to Pittsburgh and was generally pleased. I especially liked the information on local restaurants-- it was very detailed, and they took care to point out restaurants with vegetarian options, which I found helpful. However, some of the other recommendations were way off. The authors fall all over themselves praising Pittsburgh's Strip District, which is mildly interesting but also dirty (and it gives off a faintly creepy vibe)-- trust me, we found much better shopping/dining areas on our own. More maps would also help a lot! However, given that there are very few Pittsburgh travel guides on the market, I would recommend this book over the others that I glanced through (CitySmart, etc.) It also seems like it might be useful to people who are moving to Pittsburgh-- it has lots of information on childcare, healthcare, real estate, etc. which is basically useless to the common traveler but would probably help the new Pittsburgh resident.

information you don't find elsewhere
With summer travel in full swing, I found this guidebook pointed out several things about Pittsburgh I hadn't known -- namely, the great architecture and kids-oriented activities (amusement parks, science center, museums just to name a few). I'd once read an article in an airline magazine by one of the authors, and it piqued my curiosity to take a closer look at Pittsburgh. Glad I did. Also, I had no idea there were so many golf courses in Western Pa. I know people who will use that chapter more than myself, but still....lots of new facts learned about a city that has progressed over many decades.

The Insider's Guide to Pittsburgh
What a valuable book! Here is a great guide for entertaining out of town guests. Festivals and annuals events, area attractions, the arts, nightlife, restaurants, recreation, kidstuff, and much more are described in the book. Each description includes an address and telephone number for easy reference. The book is well organized and includes something for everyone in Pittsburgh - including seniors. The Insiders' Tip, a small rectangular box highlighting the authors' suggestions or comments, adds a special touch to almost every page. Now we have a book that answers the question, "What can we do?".
